Lasek = PRK PLUS

Lasek is a more refined and advanced version of PRK (the first FDA approved laser vision corrective procedure), it is a hybrid version of both PRK and Lasik.

Lasek (Laser Epithelial Keratomileusis) is a painless, advanced technique designed to reduce discomfort.

This procedure does not require a cut in the eye, instead there is an alcohol based solution applied to the outer layer of the cornea (the epithelial layer) which causes that layer to loosen. The outer layer is then moved aside which gives the laser access to the cornea in order to reshape it.

Once that is complete the outer layer may be put back into place and a protective contact lens is placed over it. This lens stays on for the next few days while the epithelial layer heals and reattaches. The protective contact lens is then, in most cases, removed at your 4 day follow up appointment.

Advantages of Lasek are that the cornea is extremely stable afterwards due to the fact that there is no flap created like there is in other laser vision procedures, such as Lasik. This removes any flap related complications. Additionally those that are not a candidate for Lasik due to the thickness of their corneas or dry eyes are likely to be candidates for Lasek.

There are little to no complications related to this procedure due to its minimally invasive nature.
